Educational Services
Science and literary arts belong together. Many kids (and adults) believe they’re bad at science. But sometimes that has a lot to do with how we teach it. Science is not all about subject-object measurements and method. It can also be creative, peronsal, and connect us to our communities through ecosocial relationships. My goal is to encourage these relationships and students’ interest in life science through creative writing, reading, and place-based education.
I specialize in creating meaningful curriculum, lessons, and experiences for students to explore life science and local plant systems through creative writing and emperical skills . These lessons are benched in common core and NGSS standards (and can be modified to fit different state standards). Lessons, workshops, professional developments can be tailored to fit profiles of students, academic needs, communities, and local ecology.
I have over a decade experience teaching to students of all ages and levels. I’m excited to share this work with you and learn together. Please review the services provided below and reach out to inquire more about my background, process, and lesson designs.
Here are services I currently provide:
Lesson planning and curricular consultations to design and support standards-based, writing-focused lessons in life science
Consultations to better utilize (and potentially design) garden space to support curriculum and learning
Consultations on existing science curriculum to improve literacy integration
Consultations around place-based opportunities to learn about local ecology and plants. In particular, students in lower-income communities are often taught that “nature” exists in other places. This isn’t true. Nature is everywhere. Let’s find it together and learn from it and with it.
Model lessons, workshops, professional developments around science, ecology, and writing. For secondary grade teachers and students, there are opportunities to integrate larger issues of equity, systems, and land into these discussions, trainings, and lessons.
Lesson support for integrating climate change concepts without burdening young students with climate doom/anxiety.
Potential Partners/Projects:
Primary Schools interested in fusing NGSS/Common Core in units of study
Secondary Schools interested in criticals studies around land and ecosystems
Botanical gardens and natural history museums in need of curricular support
Outdoor classroom integration
Creative plant writing classes for adults
There are many other possibilities. Reach out to learn more or inquire about working together!
